Food grade limonene, also known as D-limonene, is an oil found in the peel of citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits. It is used as both a flavor and fragrance enhancer in food and household goods. It is also taken as a dietary supplement to help to help prevent and treat diseases such as cancer and gastroesophageal reflux.

Gastroesophageal Reflux

Gastroesophageal reflux is a condition characterized by the back-flow of stomach contents into the esophagus, causing irritation and heartburn. Making changes to your diet, such as avoiding foods high in fat and eating smaller portions, can help to control symptoms. Supplementation with limonene may also help to relieve heartburn and reflux, according to a 2007 article published in "Alternative Medicine Review." Two clinical trials, one a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, showed a reduction in symptoms caused by gastroesophageal reflux in participants who supplemented with 1,000 milligrams of limonene.

Treatment for Gallstones

Gallstones are small pebble-like stones found in the gallbladders of some people. Most of these stones are composed of cholesterol. In some cases, gallstones can block the bile duct, causing pain, inflammation and infection. Because it is a cholesterol solvent, supplementation with limonene may help dissolve gallstones. While research has shown that direct infusion of limonene can dissolve gallstones in animal and human studies, more research is necessary before recommendations for your use can be made.
